British GP Quali: Lewis edges past Max

Lewis Hamilton edges past Max Verstappen at the British GP qualifying and will be leading the Sprint Race.

Mercedes had initially decided to not get any upgrades for 2021 season anymore. Their entire focus is on 2022 season. However with Red Bull winning 5 races back to back, Mercedes had a change of strategy and had some major upgrades introduced for the British GP. But we did not see any significant improvements in the FP1 session. Max Verstappen clearly led the practice session with Lewis and others struggling to find the pace.

This all changed in the Qualifying session when it mattered the most.

Before we go ahead please check out the new Sprint Race format introduced for the British GP.

In the Q2 and Q3 session of the British GP, Lewis Hamilton extracted everything out of the Mercedes car. Everything worked like a charm and we got to see the Mercedes team which we are so used to in the Turbo-Hybrid era. Lewis showed why he is a 7-time world champion.

Home Ground advantage for Lewis at the British GP

We had a full-capacity crowd at the British GP and it was a delight watching the British crowd cheering for Lewis after such a long time. Lewis certainly felt the energy and he said that the energy egged him to try harder.

Max won’t be that disappointed

While Lewis will be leading the Sprint Race, Max is P2 and not that far behind. He will be looking forward to the Sprint tomorrow and try to edge past the Mercedes as soon as possible. Max looked in good touch in the practice sessions and the car was handling very well too. So expect an interesting Sprint race.

Valtteri Bottas did a fine job and came in at P3. More crucially he gave a tow to Lewis which propelled him to P1. Sergio Perez had a lackluster practice session. He was doing fine in the Quali sessions and got P4 in Q3 but his lap time was deleted as he went off-track at Stowe.

Ferrari and McLaren head to head

In the Quali sessions Ferrari edged out McLaren. Charles LeClerc had a superb qualifying session and finished P4. Carlos couldn’t eke out a decent lap when it mattered and will be starting P9. Ferrari have been doing well in Quali but do they have the Race pace? We will find it out soon.

Meanwhile the McLaren boys did a decent job too. Daniel Ricciardo must be happy to be in Q3 and closer to Lando Norris, who had a super practice session but somehow not a good quali. Lando and Daniel will be starting P6 and P7 respectively.

Mr. Saturday is now Mr. Friday

George Russell has been a consistent out-performer in that Williams car, especially in Qualifying. He has made it to Q2 at least in every Quali in 2021. This time he made in to Q3, again. He will be starting P8 and must be super-excited to get a good result in front of his home crowd. But does the Williams have the race pace?

Vettel will be starting P10 with Stroll being P15. A lot was expected from Alpine and Alpha-Tauri but neither team could make it to Q3.
