British GP Sprint: Max overtakes Lewis
Max Verstappen overtakes Lewis Hamilton at the start of the British GP Sprint and then never looks back. He will be starting from Pole.
Formula 1 is trying a new format and we see a Sprint race for the first time. The Qualifying session yesterday set up the grid position for the Sprint Race.
Max pips Lewis at the start of British Sprint Race
Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton worked very hard to come up on top in the qualifying session. They have been struggling and are behind Red Bull Racing for the last 5 races. However it all went down the drain right at the start. Max Verstappen got a fantastic start despite having over-heated the brakes and by the first corner he was quite ahead of Lewis. The Mercedes driver tried hard to catch up but he just couldn’t close the gap. It was a smooth sailing for Max from there. The Red Bull looked good and had the pace. Max and Lewis will be started from the front row at the British GP and it will be an exciting race.
Decent job by Valtteri
The other Mercedes driver, Valtteri Bottas, tried a different strategy, starting the race on Soft tyres and hoping to get some early gains. However that did not materialize and was stuck in the same position. Still he got 1 point and P3 is not a bad place to start the race.
A day to forget for Checo
While Max had a super Saturday, it was a day to forget for Sergio Perez. He started P5 but quickly lost positions as the Sprint started. Then climbed back a few positions before spinning his car and barely managing to stay away from the barriers. In end he had to retire the car and will be starting from the back of the grid.
Charles LeClerc had a good Sprint as he managed to hold on to his P4 position. He will hoping that the Ferrari will have the race pace to get some good points tomorrow. His teammate Carlos Sainz had a contact with George Russell, losing positions before recovering a bit and will be starting P11.
McLaren boys did a decent job although they would have expected more from Lando. He will be starting P5. Daniel did a good job and made up a position to start P6 in the race.
Alonso had a fantastic start to the race. Starting on the Softs he quickly gained six positions in the first lap. The Softs did not degrade as much as expected, losing only a few positions and still gaining 4 positions net. He will be starting P7.
For George Russell the highs of getting into Q3 soon faded away. He had a contact with Carlos for which he is handed a 3 place grid penalty. Historically Williams did not have the race pace but George will be hoping to extract the most.
