Hungary GP : Oscar wins maiden F1 win

Oscar Piastri wins his maiden F1 race in Hungary. Lando gave his position to come P2. Lewis came P3

Oscar Hungary for First Win

It was the start that worked out. McLaren had the front row with Lando P1 and Oscar P2. At start Lando tried to cover Max and in all of that it was Oscar who went ahead. But it was not just that. Oscar not only maintained the lead but increased it a lot. Hungary is a track where the undercut is really powerful. The first pitstop went well but it was the second one that became an issue. Despite Oscar being ahead, it was Lando who was asked to pit first in order to cover for Max and Lewis. Oscar came in a lap later and ended up behind Lando. Oscar was assured that he would be given the place back but Lando was not super-keen to do so. To make matter worse Lando had some solid pace and Oscar was not able to catch up. A lot of back and forth went between the team and Lando. Eventually Lando relented and gave up the top spot.

McLaren was clearly the favourites this weekend. However they have to iron out a lot of chinks if they want to fight for the championship. In the hindsight they should have asked Lando to pass right after the second pitstop and allowed the two drivers to race. However they kept it right till the end and made it awkward for everyone. Even Oscar couldn’t enjoy his first F1 win as much as he would have wanted.

Red Bull hurting in Hungary

Max was one angry person in Hungary. Red Bull brought in a lot of upgrades but they clearly did not work as much as they would have hoped. There was a lot of friction between him and his radio manager GP. Max was frustrated and it showed. He even had a minor collision with Lewis as he tried to overtake him and ended up locking up and going straight. While Red Bull and Max have a healthy lead, it is a long season and there are still 11 races left. They cannot take the Championship victory for granted.

Lewis had a nice race and while he was quite behind the McLarens, the still managed to finish P3. Ferrari have a lot of work to do but they still did a decent job with Charles at P4 and Carlos P6, owing to a bad start. Perez drove well to end up at P7, starting from P16. Similarly Russell had a good recovery race. Yuki finished P9 and Lance got the final point at P10.
